Why Chickens? Feathers can be Fabulous!

Updated: Nov 5

Hello Golden Gaters! I'm Karrie, the little sister. Big sister Darla is the one with all the fabulous horses and I'm the Kentucky girl, living out our dream on a smaller yet equally rewarding scale!

I never dreamed of raising chickens. They seemed to be on a different plain entirely from the amazing animals that lived with me and my sister in our fantasy world of Golden Gate. I envisioned raising horses, unicorns, pegasus and your occasional saber-tooth tiger, but not chickens. So what changed?

Quite simply, sometimes your childhood fantasy doesn't quite line up with adult reality. In other words, I didn't have space...and unicorns have not been proven to exist yet. What didn't change was my love and desire to raise beautiful, pampered animals that charmed me.

In 2020, as we all know, a lot of things changed. Along with all the change, a desire was sparked in me to start my small farm even though space was limited. I was ready to make my dream a reality. Chickens were ideal! I could have the farm without the acreage.

raising baby chicks

I started with four chicks, not having a clue of what to do or how to raise them. But with research, patience, trial and error, and plenty of giggles and "awww"s, four babies thrived and turned into my first four gorgeous hens. I named them my Golden Girls.

I was hooked after that. They brought me joy, peace and comfort. They also brought me eggs...bonus! Four hens turned to eight and after four spring seasons, I now have eighteen spoiled, feathered friends

Their personalities are all unique. Some are spunky while others are a bit more reserved. Some follow me around while others blaze their own trail. But, they are all my babies, especially Shy.

Shy is part of my 2023 flock. She's a Buff Brahma, the gentle giants of chickens! Something about her resonates with me. She watches for me and will always separate herself from the others when I'm around as if to say "Pick me! Pick me!" I'd like to think she's as fond of me as I am of her.

I strongly encourage anyone who has dreamed of farm life but may not have the space, to start with hens. Don't let limited space hinder your dream! My ladies have filled a part of my soul that was created as a child and I know they would do the same for you!
